Over the past few years my work has become focused on the human experience, giving a platform of others who are willing to share their stories and testimonies. I explore these narratives through the use of fabric and video mediums.
For my final year project, I have chosen to base it around the queer event of coming out. As it was something that I’ve experienced, so I was intrigued to sit down with others and listen to their testimonies.
The main reason I chose to use fabric/textiles in all of my projects is due to the personal relationship the medium has to me. It represents warmth, home and security. Whilst also embodying an essence of nostalgia, of when I was younger and my mother used to sit down and teach me fabric construction all whilst retelling family histories.
With each project, I’m challenged to come up with new ways to visually represent and capture the individuals stories. I’ve always struggled on finding a relationship between fabric and video work. Through exploration and experimenting over the past year, stop-motion animation has been highlighted as the missing link.
