“Every migrant has a name, a face, and a story” Migration has had a profound effect on the coastal areas of Fujian (China) where there is highly specialized emigration, some villages are emptied, and men left their families behind and wives have to raise the children alone.  

I focus on stories of first generation Chinese illegal labourers who immigrated to the UK through abnormal (illegal or forced) channels, to reflect an unusual state of survival. My work collects memories to replace sadness with empathy. My practice is located in Dover, the most common entrance for immigrants in Britain. Many migrants arrived to Dover on any given day last summer hidden in a container, transported by a ferry to England. I have re-enacted the stowaway’ role while shooting my film. I use my voice to illustrate a harsh smuggled story, combining filmed images and storytelling. 

In my film, the ‘net’ has a symbolic meaning. It means a cell, a prison. My participants, are eager to regain freedom and hope after breaking free from the ‘net’, and want to start a new live in the other shore, real or imagined. The Other Shore film can be watch in here https://youtu.be/l4V-MJ8MQsM
