My practice explores the relationship between vision and olfaction – the visual language of smell. I am interested in how certain photographs can make viewers think of particular smells when looking at them. Since my practice is research-based and closely related to scents and photography, major part of my research concerns the mechanical side of photography, perfumery and scientific research on olfaction and vision, which also relates to the topic of memory and time. The processes I use in my practice include analog photography on 35 mm film, film processing and making prints from negatives. The physicality of the medium and processes with the possibilities of the darkroom make this medium more intimate and precise to me, as well as film photographs being latent images before they are processed; being invisible, just like smells. The aim of my work is to show the importance of smells and the relationship between what we smell and what we see; to tell the story about the fictional science – visual language of smell.
