My final major project investigates the idea of how places/locations can be recorded and explored directly through drawing. Different processes of drawing are the main methods of my project, as much of my work generates a dialogue between drawing and mark making. Instead of photography, I wanted to focus on drawing because it enables an artist to capture it as they experience it themselves – a photograph perceives a scene very differently than the human eye does. The themes of my project revolve around places, cityscapes, history and architecture.
As an immigrant, I’ve been living in Birmingham for the last 6 years but didn’t really explore the city properly. My relationship with this place is something that I’ve become interested in this project. I used drawing as a way of knowing Birmingham city and to build a deep relationship. But through this knowing process, I specifically became interested in documenting the city’s traditional and modern architectural buildings. It feels very aesthetic to see how the old traditional buildings are contrasted by the new modern buildings and how this beautifully creates a contrast within the city.
