I am a UK based MA Contemporary Arts China Student exploring the impact that social systems have on individuals.
My work over the past year studying at BCU (Birmingham City University) has made a shift from objects and paintings based to multi-media approach including web-based projects, photography, video shooting and installations. In my work, I look at the collective struggle of humankind and the ways social systems function in individuals. I am interested in making something happen, telling stories, presenting hidden systems, or raising people’s awareness of social issues. I see art as a tool for building up dialogues and connecting people.
My current art project The Strangers is about the life and dreams of Chinese working-class people in Birmingham. I have produced a photography set, a video, and a booklet to capture the mentality that participants have and visualize their struggles and reality in a surrealistic way. The juxtaposition of working hands, British natural sceneries and the music selected by participants is the demonstration of my practice: how the British social environment affects the mentality of the Chinese working-class people and how their real lives differ from their dreams.
