No mind is safe, 2021

My name is Fraser Burton, I am UK artist, who has a passion for exploring and experimenting with different materials and methods. I create film, sculpture, collage, printing, etc and have had many different themes to my work in the past.

I am in my final year at Birmingham City University studying Fine art. It has been a long journey for me as I have autism and attended a Special Needs Secondary School, followed by 4 years at Solihull College Studying Art.

In my latest project I have thought deeply about my experiences through the lockdown. It had really impacted me so much this year. It has opened my eyes and made me realise much more about myself and my autism. I have become much more aware of the situation I am in and I wanted to create these works to share my experiences of how isolating the lockdown has been and how it has changed my life.

Artwork: My works are about my experience as a disabled student. My sculptures capture my intense feelings of anxiety and fear. They show how my own mind can become my enemy, where sometimes I cannot trust or encourage myself. My recent works explore my sense of isolation felt during the lockdown as a person on the autism spectrum.

I use all different types of papers and printing inks or any sort of materials I could find during the lockdown. I use the printmaker method to design the surface and then fold it into sculptures: paper represents my fantasy, and plaster or mudrock represents reality.
