The Absence of Light by Finn Sharratt

I’ve always been interested in drawing. From a young age watching people draw, seeing the amazing sketch’s they created inspired me. I feel animation is the step forward from drawing, making drawings come to life to tell a story, relay a message or a fantasy. The use of my hands was a contestant point throughout my whole project as was the use of the colour blue, both adding a greater metaphorical meaning to my animation. I used this project as an opportunity to experiment with animation and the themes and ideas which formed my work are: –

Confined spaces

Becoming a tool within a confined space

Mental health within young people aged 17-24

Rapid acceleration of the use of digital platforms due to COVID-19

Minimal communication with peers and friends

The theme of raising awareness of mental health issues for young people linked to the concept of depression and isolation was my ambition. Also, for my audience to think about the images that they are seeing in a more metaphorical way rather than in a literal sense.

A blue grid on a white background. On top of the grid are 3 angular shapes made. These shapes suggest concrete, steel and mirrored glass. In the bottom left a hand appears to grip the blue grid structure.
