From a background of painting and printmaking, my recent works have incorporated text, and people from the community. The themes that interest me are the stories of migration. How communities are formed and coexist. The heritage and culture people bring to their new environment. My father’s journey is the catalyst in my exploration, and this is the beginning of my journey. I like to discover and document how communities have changed, each bringing a new generation of newness. I work with migrant women; and many are restricted in the western world; I want to amplify voice through my art practice for these women.
The influx of people from different backgrounds into the UK creates more curiosity about why people migrate. These are the stories I aim to explore further in my practice through a multi-disciplinary practice. It may contain poetry, verse, or drawings. I like to keep an open approach in my thinking where I am not restricted to one practice.
My recent work involves the circulation of 10 journals, where migrant individuals will document their experience and then pass on the journal to someone else. Once completed, I am hoping they return the journal back to me. It will be interesting to see what people have chosen to share. A website has also been created to reach a wider audience. My target is to collect and publish 1000 stories and experiences.
