Other echoes inhabit the garden
Over the course of this project, I have sought ways to depict the anxieties and fears that individuals like myself face after a cancer (brain tumour) diagnosis. Utilising the Victorian language of flowers, I have built up a library of imagery reflecting ideas behind Momento Mori paintings (remember you must die). This is highlighted in my final projection installation, where snowdrops, pansies and nettles are depicted alongside anatomical illustrations of brains, arteries and visceral masses. The project draws inspiration from The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, where an oppressed woman is driven mad by a wallpaper on which she projects her feelings of entrapment and loneliness.
