A PERSONAL ODYSSEY: HOW TO MESH THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE UNIVERSAL According to Jung, universal archetypes can be found in our personal subconscious, in our art and in our myths. I seek to explore this using different layers of representation. Here is Homer’s famous myth – Circe’s Island, the Ocean of the Dead. Utopia is both Odysseus’s home and blissful reunion with Penelope, but it is also a design for a baroque church fresco showing Adam and Eve. However, Utopia turns into a final scene of Dystopia. As in Hogarth’s satirical prints, modern problems undermine the ideal. The collage of sketches on each map were not originally illustrative but came from my subconscious. The OS maps suggest a real present and life’s journey. Elements are taken from the present and the past, home and abroad, mythical and real – to remind the viewer of the floating nature of reality.
