How has the Implementation of Art in the Public Realm Added Value within Britain’s Former Coalfield Communities?

This research demonstrates the potential value that can be added through art commissioned within the public realm, particularly in communities that encounter multifaceted challenges. Specifically exploring its capability within the former colliery communities of Britain. 

Former coalfield communities continue to underperform in various areas both socially and economically. This can be attributed as a repercussion of poorly handled mass unemployment and mining closures. This paper discusses the socio-political events that occurred during the ‘Thatcher years’ and their subsequent impact felt then and today.
