Safe Space 5.0, 2021

My name is Stephanie Greetham, I was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. When I was 16 I moved to the United Kingdom.

I am mainly a painter but I tend to venture into writing and sculpture when exploring new projects. My interest in painting naked women stems from my past experiences with sexual violence, I am a survivor sexual assault. A form of therapy for me became empowering other women and encouraging them to recognise their power and strength through their bodies and sexuality. Claiming ownership over their divine feminine, which was something I had lost after my sexual assaults.

So I painted and painted and painted until I had no one left to paint, 30+ women were involved and supported ‘The Body Project’, transforming it into a beautiful foundation for female community. My project was open to male and non-binary participants but my platform it seemed was too small to reach any who felt comfortable to participate.

‘Eco-sexuality’ was a topic I explored in a University project, morphing the intent behind The Body Project’  into a connection between plant and feminine. Being an extreme plant mama, this was something very exciting for me. I investigated the origins of eco-sexuality and studied the practices, allowing myself to confidently perform my own connective rituals. I was surveying plant-life as a living, breathing , cognitive individual while using sexuality as a way to explore and test the physical and mental relationship with plant and human.

‘The Safe Space’  is currently my baby, where I link all my past projects and ideas into one beautiful little nest egg.  Seeing as we are in a national lockdown and limited to our different types of therapy, this space becomes somewhere safe and protected where I can safely explore those emotions and feelings one would usually take to therapy. Prior to Covid-19 the space was open to participation to involve other survivors of sexual assault to take part in the practice of art therapy within the space, due to safety measurements my household will only be able to use the space and the community will stand within the materials used to create the room

The annual Degree Show is a highly anticipated event amongst staff, students, external partners and friends of the School of Art – it provides a platform for the work that the students have spent so long conceiving and producing. The 2023 Degree Show has been realised through an ongoing testing of ideas in public arenas in which the discourse around art practice takes place. This process of realising practice which engages with audiences has over […]
