Ryan Asbury is an artist living and working in Birmingham, UK. They are one of the founding members and is the current director of the art collective Round Lemon.
Their work explores many themes encircling the ‘inexonaivety’ of humans. Societal issues surrounding kink, sex work and queer identity. Most notably their sexual and domestic performance ‘CAMSHOW’ in 2019. Their work comes in many forms Including writing, performance, digital constructs and painting.
More recently, the creation of ‘Switch Manifesto’ in 2020 acts as a centerpiece for their work to orbit. Exploring the narrative that queer people are evacuating Earth and seeking asylum on Pluto – a space rock which has a fluctuating identity. With the hope of finding a more inclusive regime.
“I do not think my work will change the world. I do not want to change the world, am I any better than any selfish dictator if I change the world to exactly how I think it should look? I make work for myself at the end of the day – though I take pleasure in the small victories. If my work gives someone the confidence to wear fishnets out in public for the first time, or not to shave their legs for once, to wear glittery nail varnish or to say fuck it and do the one thing they have always wanted to do despite the social constructs that stand in their way, that is bloody brilliant! It is important to improve and change YOUR world not THE world.”
