Maryam Aisha is an artist who uses textiles to explore, reconnect and represent her identity as a British Pakistani Muslim woman. Her content explores a navigation in connecting back to her culture and religion, exploring personal histories, traditional materials, processes and techniques. Drawing attention to cultural and religious decorative art and ways in which it can transform into archival art/history, as a means to holding on to traditions, traditional processes, materials, generations and their history. Her work presents as decorative art, meant to excite the eye but to also challenge the connotations of ‘decorative’, that transcends decoration and becomes forms of worship and remembrance.
