Loungewear Shorts by Georgia Hewlett

My work is about clothing, I use fashion design and make contemporary garments that are inspired and informed by my Nan and Grandma’s knitting. I am interested in exploring my Nan and Grandma’s relationship with domestic craft, I was fascinated by their understanding of the craft as no more than a hobby, how they never viewed their making as art. As a contemporary artist and designer, I am interested in how you might blur the boundaries between domestic craft and contemporary art. Drawing from feminist theories and the history of craft itself. Thinking about the classification of women’s art/ textile art.

I am intrigued by all aspects of fashion design from illustration to pattern cutting and garment creation. Practicality is a key theme in my practice, work inspired by my nan and grandma’s choice of making things they needed/ wanted rather than buying them. I created loungewear pieces as in a pandemic that’s all I wanted to wear. It feels quite stereo typical for me as a young woman to be interested in fashion and clothing, I want to subvert that relationship and stereotype that a lot of people have by introducing this DIY craft, self-taught element back into the practice. Creating art through an intergenerational practice that is practical through communication and making.

A blue grid on a white background. On top of the grid are 3 angular shapes made. These shapes suggest concrete, steel and mirrored glass. In the bottom left a hand appears to grip the blue grid structure.
