My major project revolves around the concept of ‘’Illusion’’ and that famous quote ‘’ all that glitters is not gold’.’ I am developing works that appear as gold but in reality, that is not the case. I want to portray that everything which shines does not necessarily have to be pure from the inside. This concept arose from my personal experience of life events, and also relates to the old Mughal period, to an era which was very organic and pure compared to the present time, where everything has become artificial.
I would like to discuss my experience of my marriage. In our culture, dowry holds extreme importance from the bride and even the groom’s side. This also includes gold, which is very important in our culture at a wedding. In my marriage, the gold received in my dowry from the groom’s side was fake, it was not pure gold, the jewelry was fake which was only gold plated. Giving pure gold holds extreme importance in our culture and this act of giving fake jewelry in dowry is highly unreasonable.
This fakeness is also very common in emotions too in the current era. I would like to quote two phrases here which is very famous, ‘’he is a gem of a person’’ and ‘’ he has a heart of gold’’, but that is only to the point of saying, we cannot judge other people until we know them deeply or even start living with them.
I want to portray this fakeness that has arose in this present time, using various materials. My works include painting, golden ink, print-making, embossing, digital prints, etc. The artworks which I am working on currently are very decorative showing how not everything is as it may look. When we look deeper into the matter we then come to know of the reality.
