A Study of Visual Grammar in the Cover Illustrations of “China Daily Global Weekly” under the Perspective of National Cultural Image

In my research, I explore the visual construction of China’s national cultural image through the cover illustrations of “China Daily Global Weekly.” Using the visual grammar theory as a framework, I analyse the representational, interactive, and compositional meanings within these illustrations. I applied content analysis—a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods—to examine 113 culturally themed issues from February 2019 to July 2024. My focus is on how traditional cultural symbols and advanced socialist culture are visually represented, investigating the strategies used to convey a dynamic and multifaceted image of Chinese culture that balances tradition with modernity. The findings from this study highlight the strategic use of color, symbolism, and composition to foster a national identity that is both culturally rich and globally relevant.
