Grandmother Clock

Does a tree have memories? Are our Experiences stored in the layered rings of its wood?

Grandmother clock is about how my experiences in my grandparents garden, and my grandma’s example in particular has influences my love for the natural world.

The Atlas Cedar in the middle of the garden is a tree that knows my family well. We have been playing on or around it since my dad was a child. It’s wood is the material used to create this work.

The piece is a recreation of my grandma’s clock which sang a different birdsong every hour. My grandma’s love for birds is a large part of my memory of her, and her care for the natural world, and has lead to my love for birds. A clock is a symbol of time and it is the time my grandma spent with nature, and the family that showed her love. The wood itself is also a symbol of time as each layer of wood tells a story of the years spent in the garden. The birds will preserve these memories, being a reminder of those experiences, and of course my grandma.

The image shows two photographs and an image of a broach. The photographs show a young Chinese woman with long black hair wearing a black jumper. She has a broach that is shaped like a mobile phone and is made of soft fabric circles in orange and copper colours. IN the second photo a close up shows some hands holding a mobile phone with the broach visible on the models top.
